Hidden Havre: A Family Day

The gem of the Hi-Line, the heart of small-town Montana, a city full of stories waiting to be found—Havre has it all...including family fun. From underground adventures and dinosaur discoveries to vintage milkshakes and mountain trails, the day is yours to explore! Lean in, laugh, and find yourself off the beaten path—because Havre memories are made to last long after the sun sets.

Havre Beneath the Streets

Step back in time at an old-fashioned barber shop, the Sporting Eagle Saloon, and a turn-of-the-century honky tonk. After a fire swept through Havre in the early 1900s, many businesses moved underground—creating saloons, restaurants, and even butcher shops that remain intact today. They’re no longer in operation, but the Havre Beneath the Streets Tour makes them feel alive! Don’t miss the Frank DeRosa Railroad Museum upstairs in the same building.

H. Earl Clack Museum

When you’re ready for a little Jurassic action, head to the H. Earl Clack Museum—home to possibly the coolest sign in Havre and a must-stop on the Montana Dinosaur Trail. Marvel at prehistoric fossils, dig into Native American artifacts, and explore local pioneer life on the Hi-Line. With colorful exhibits and hands-on history, there’s plenty to spark curiosity in history buffs and little dinosaur enthusiasts alike.

Wolfer’s Diner

Lunch, dinner, a little mid-day milkshake—this retro diner (and Havre icon) has it all. Located in the heart of downtown, Wolfer’s Diner serves up classic comfort food with a side of major nostalgia. From hearty burgers and fries to kids' meals served in a vintage car, every bite hits the mark. Grab a booth, soak in the vibes, and enjoy a true taste of the Hi-Line.

Wahkpa Chu’gn Buffalo Jump

Buffalo jumps are both an honored Native American practice and a cornerstone of Montana history. After a day inside, head out toward the badlands and discover Wahkpa Chu’gn Buffalo Jump, where hunters once drove bison over the cliffs. Wander the interpretive trails, take in the dramatic views, and see layers of bison bones preserved right in the ground.

Bear Paw Battlefield

Looking to continue the journey? Venture out of town and escape into a place of beauty and deep remembrance at Bear Paw Battlefield. Anchored by a family-friendly interpretive trail, the battlefield marks the final conflict of the Nez Perce War of 1877—honoring Chief Joseph and inviting visitors into the resilient story that shaped our lands.

Pro Tip: Check out the ranger-guided tours in the summer months!
