badlands along the milk river

Badlands is a type of dry terrain where softer sedimentary rocks and clay-rich soils have been extensively eroded by wind and water. It can resemble a terrain of volcanic rock. Canyons, ravines, gullies, hoodoos and other such geological forms are common in badlands. They are often difficult to navigate by foot. The eroded “badlands” exposed along the Milk River road just North of Havre combine geology, paleontology and scenery in a short 5-mile drive. The road follows the channel of the ancient Missouri River to the site of the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Rookery park and river access. Fossils found in these “badlands” prove the existence of marine animals, dinosaurs and other reptiles and even tropical plants in this area millions of years ago. Much of the area is under private ownership requiring permission to explore. The easy, short drive is interesting and rewarding.
